Just north of the Forbidden City lies the beautiful Beihai Park. Filled with lakes, flowers, mountains, and temples, this park is a great place to go for a walk, grab a bite to eat, go hiking or fish. As soon as you enter the park you immediately cross a bridge to the magical little island. Atop the island is a huge white stupa that overlooks much of the surrounding city. Here you can take in the beautiful sites and forget about the crazy streets that lie just a few hundred meters away.
This park just exemplified everything Pictured Asia to be. It has peaceful willows blowing in the breeze, ornate walkways winding up the mountain, little temples jutting out of the hill, gazebos giving you a scenic spot to sit every so often, blossoming trees filling the paths with color, and little bridges taking you over the waterways.
Along one of edges of the island I met Dong Kou trying his luck at fishing. Without a pole he would throw a fishing line into the lake in hopes of pulling up his dinner. Though he hadn’t caught a thing, he was excited to have the audience and came very alive with his casts. Every time he would pull up an empty line he would exclaim “No fish! No fish!” showing off his very small english vocabulary. Fish or no fish, he definitely had the right idea being outside and enjoying the island shores of Beihai park.
